1. Purpose and approach
Section titled “1. Purpose and approach”We want amarti to be a business our people are proud of and our clients are comfortable being associated with, measured honestly, without overstatement.
amarti is a small, remote-first data engineering consultancy. Our direct environmental footprint is modest and our biggest opportunity to do good sits in how we treat our people, how we choose our suppliers, and the responsibility we bring to the data systems we build for clients.
This policy sets out what we commit to. We have deliberately kept it to commitments we can actually evidence. We would rather report a small number of things accurately than publish targets we cannot substantiate.
2. Scope
Section titled “2. Scope”This policy applies to all amarti operations, our people, and the goods and services we buy. It also informs how we advise clients on the design of data platforms and the decisions we make about the work we take on.
amarti is below the thresholds for mandatory Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting and for climate-related financial disclosure. We nonetheless consider climate change as a relevant issue in the context of our management systems, as required by the 2024 climate amendments to ISO 9001 and ISO/IEC 27001.
3. Environment
Section titled “3. Environment”- Remote-first working. We operate without a large permanent office estate. This materially reduces commuting emissions and is our single largest environmental benefit.
- Travel. We default to remote delivery and remote client meetings. Where travel is necessary, we favour rail over air and over car for domestic journeys. Travel is booked on the basis of need, not habit.
- Energy and hosting. We favour cloud providers that publish credible renewable energy commitments and regional carbon data, and we design client workloads to be efficient: right-sizing compute, scheduling batch work off-peak where it is cheaper and cleaner, and decommissioning unused resources promptly. Efficient data engineering is lower-carbon data engineering.
- Equipment. We extend the life of laptops and peripherals as far as is consistent with our security requirements, and we dispose of end-of-life equipment through licensed recyclers in line with the Disposal and Reuse of Equipment Policy (AM-POL-020) and the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations 2013.
- Paper and consumables. We work digitally by default. Printing of client material is discouraged and is in any case restricted by the Clear Desk and Clear Screen Policy (AM-POL-017).
4. Social
Section titled “4. Social”Our people
Section titled “Our people”- We pay at or above the National Living Wage and pay all our people directly and on time.
- We recruit and promote on merit, and we do not discriminate on any protected characteristic under the Equality Act 2010. We make reasonable adjustments for disabled applicants and employees.
- We support flexible and remote working and treat workload and wellbeing as a standing management responsibility, as set out in the Health and Safety Policy (AM-POL-003).
- We invest in the technical development of our consultants, because in a consultancy that is both a social good and a commercial necessity.
- We maintain a working environment free from bullying and harassment. We take our duty to prevent sexual harassment seriously and are preparing for the strengthened duty to take all reasonable steps, which takes effect on 30 October 2026 under the Employment Rights Act 2025.
Community and clients
Section titled “Community and clients”- We do not knowingly work on engagements whose purpose is to deceive, to discriminate unlawfully, or to cause foreseeable harm to individuals.
- Where we build systems that make or support decisions about people, we raise fairness, transparency and data minimisation with the client as a matter of course. This is part of our professional responsibility, not an optional extra.
- We support access to the profession through mentoring and by considering candidates from non-traditional backgrounds.
5. Governance
Section titled “5. Governance”- amarti holds ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certification for information security management and ISO 9001:2015 certification for quality management. Both are independently audited.
- We maintain a documented policy framework, reviewed at least annually, as described in the Policy Governance Framework (AM-POL-011).
- We operate a zero-tolerance approach to bribery and corruption (AM-POL-005) and publish a voluntary modern slavery statement (AM-STM-001).
- We expect our suppliers to meet equivalent standards and assess them on onboarding and periodically thereafter (AM-POL-007).
- Risks, including environmental and social risks, are captured on the company risk register and escalated in line with the Risk Escalation Policy and Procedure (AM-POL-010).
6. Commitments and measures
Section titled “6. Commitments and measures”| Commitment | How we measure it | Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| Maintain remote-first delivery as the default | Proportion of engagements delivered predominantly remotely | Annual |
| Prefer rail to air for domestic business travel | Travel bookings reviewed at year end | Annual |
| Zero equipment to landfill | Certificates of recycling or secure destruction retained for every disposal | Per disposal |
| All suppliers screened on onboarding | Percentage of active suppliers with a completed questionnaire | Annual |
| Maintain ISO 27001 and ISO 9001 certification | Successful surveillance or recertification audit | Annual |
| No confirmed incidents of modern slavery, bribery or unlawful discrimination | Incident and concern records | Annual |
We will begin estimating a basic scope 1, 2 and 3 carbon footprint once we have a full year of consistent travel and hosting data. We have chosen not to publish a net-zero target until we can measure a baseline credibly.
7. Responsibilities and review
Section titled “7. Responsibilities and review”James Peachey, Co-founder, is accountable for this policy and reports on progress at the annual management review. Ben Alexander leads supplier and client-facing aspects. Amardeep Sirha leads on the efficiency and lifecycle aspects of our technology estate.
This policy is reviewed at least annually. We will keep the ISO 9001:2026 revision under review during its transition period and will reflect its expanded expectations around quality culture and ethical behaviour when we transition.
