Epic roadmaps

An epic roadmap is a deliberately simple plan: the larger chunks of work, the epics, laid out in the order we intend to deliver them and grouped by rough time period. It gives a client a believable picture of what is coming without pretending we can predict month seven to the day.

How we use it

• Break the goal into epics, each a meaningful outcome rather than a task.
• Order them by value and risk, so the most important and most uncertain work is not left to the end.
• Group them into now, next and later. Now is firm, later is a direction of travel.
• Revisit it in the open as we learn. A roadmap that never changes is one nobody is really using.

Why not a fully dated plan

A detailed date-by-date plan implies a certainty we do not have early on, and it quietly becomes a promise. The roadmap pairs with the delivery process: confidence rises as we go, and the plan gets more precise only where it has earned the right to be.
